Liverpool Vision are creating a new set of playing fields for the young people of Speke, replacing some of the older shops on the South Parade. During the construction work the site will be bounded by a long and unattractive security fence.
Andy Wallace of Liverpool Vision approached Mr Hughes, Head of Art at Parklands High School, to see if he could come up with some ideas to brighten up the area.
Mr Hughes, in turn, approached the newly formed Year 10 BTEC Art Group and they took on the project.
In just one week they were able to write a design brief and deliver the finished work, which is based upon views and landmarks of Liverpool and Speke.
The work was professionally printed and mounted along the perimeter of the site opposite the Post Office and photographs of the work will support the pupils’ BTEC portfolio.
Another group of pupils displaying their work in Speke is the Year 11 GCSE Art class. This group were very successful in March, winning the BEROL National Art Award and continued their success by being invited to display some of their coursework at John Lennon Airport as part of Liverpool’s ‘Capital of Culture 2008’ celebrations. The work was officially unveiled by Phil Redmond and can be viewed until Christmas at the entrance to the Departure Lounge.
